Keep Unwanted Pop-ups Away

You may have experienced it more than once in an hour - having pop-ups come up instead of the site you want to see. Sometimes they are helpful, but most of the time, they are annoying. The dangerous fact is that they can also be used as an attack method by phishing scams, spywares or worse.

Phishing is a type of e-mail scam that is used to gather information about one’s identity, which can be your username and password. Spywares on the other hand are software programs that when executed either installs another program, usually a virus, or takes control over some actions without the user knowing.

Because of this susceptible threat, users are always advised to be alert and make sure that any of these malicious attackers will most stand a chance. That is also why pop-up blockers are important in one’s computer.

What are pop-ups? Pop-up ads (or simply pop-ups) are one way of online marketing and advertising over the Internet. Supposedly they are used to increase a site’s traffic. However, users usually do not know which are useful and which are not, it’s always handy to be ready.

IE and Firefox are two of the most popular browsers currently and fortunately, both support a form of pop-up blocker. For our purposes, the following steps will discuss how to turn on the Pop-Up Blocker in Internet Explorer.

Take note that the Pop-up Blocker in the Windows Internet Explorer is already turned-on by default.

There are three ways to turn on your Internet Explorer’s Pop-Up Blocker: 1) when you are prompted; 2) through the Tools menu; and 3) from IE’s Internet Options.

When prompted, all you have to do is select to turn-on your Pop-up Blocker.

On the Tools Menu, on the other hand, follow these steps. First, click on Start, then select “All Programs” then click on Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, point to “Pop-up Blocker”. Turn on Pop-Up Blocker.

The third and last method is through IE’s Internet Options. Press Start then point to “All Programs” and then click on Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Go to the Privacy tab and then select the “Block pop-ups” check box. Press “Apply” then “OK”.
